Hatching Chicken Eggs

We’ve been discussing gardening for a little while, especially now that spring is here and it’s the perfect time to start your backyard garden. But if you have chickens, it’s also the time to tread carefully so that you don’t accidentally harm them in the process. Thankfully, a healthy and well fed chicken isn’t likely to get into dangerous situations with your plants, but occasionally a curious hen may be tempted to make a meal of your garden. For this reason, it’s important to take precautions when planting your flowers and veggies.

There’s a fairly long list of poisonous plants to your hens, and many of these plants will cause tummy issues (not kill your hens) BUT there are a few that will go beyond that and could seriously injure your bird. You can see this complete list below, but a few common examples of plants that could make your bird sick are beans, acorns, avocados, coffee, poison ivy, poison oak, azaleas, and more!

In addition to the plants, you must also be careful with the plant food and weed killer you’re using, as some of these can also be hazardous to your birds. As a general rule of thumb, chemicals should be avoided. You never know where those chemicals may leak to, and you don’t want to accidentally feed your birds it. Weed killer, grass killer, pesticide, etc. should not be used (for your health as well as your flock).

If you’ve decided to build a garden bed or an enclosure for your garden, be sure you thoroughly sweep the area before allowing any hens out in it. Nails, bolts, wood chips, etc. may all look tasty to your birds and they may accidentally consume one or more of these pieces. Metal poisoning is not a fun experience. Good luck and be safe!
